Kanimozhi, currently in jail in Delhi for her alleged role in the country's biggest scam, has sued two Tamil magazines for publishing photos of her son. Kanimozhi was sent to Tihar Jail last month by a special court in Delhi that's trying the 2G scam. On multiple occasions, her young son and husband, G. Aravindan, have been present in court with her.

"By publishing the photographs of Ms Kanimozhi's minor son, while she is defending herself in the ongoing 2G case, the intent of the publisher seems to be not just to defame her and distort facts. The motive of those behind this immoral act appears to be to cause agony and induce trauma on to the minor child as well", declared a statement issued by her office. Kanimozhi's father, M Karunanidhi, is the head of the DMK and was voted out as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu last month after his party delivered one of its worst-ever electoral performances. Analysts believe that the 2G scam, which seems inextricably linked to several top leaders of the DMK, was largely to blame for the party's obliteration in the elections.

A Raja, once a favourite of Mr Karunanidhi's, was arrested in February for masterminding the 2G scam when he was Telecom Minister is 2008. He allegedly gave mobile network licenses and spectrum at throwaway prices to companies that were ineligible for them. One of those firms - Swan Telecom - is accused of sending him a kickback worth Rs. 214 crore. That bribe was deposited, according to investigators, with a TV channel in Chennai that is owned largely by Kanimozhi and her step mother. Kanimozhi has argued that she was not an active participant in the company's affairs. She has also said that the money from Swan was in exchange for equity and was returned with interest after the deal fell through
